Laser Cut DCI Lab Panther Frame
Using Laser Gold Foil
The Why
At the Design Create and Innovate Lab (DCI), us staff members like to do a white elephant right before winter break, where each staff member creates something using the facilities we provide, and this year (2024) I decided to utilize the new laser foil to create a frame of our logo
This panther design was made by Annika Krein, a previous staff member of the DCI lab, and the logo is currently on our door to the DCI lab
The Build
Recent to this build, we got a new item called "laser foil" which is almost like a sticker, but can be laser cut to create unique designs on things like wood and other materials suitable for laser cutters
So first I used 1/8th inch plywood to create the wood backing, using the engrave function on the laser cutter to darken the wood
I then layered the laser foil on top, and cut out the shape of the panther, peeled away the parts I don't want, and was left with only the panther in gold
I then cut out acrylic to encase the design, and made wood corners to protect the corners, hide the glue from the acrylic to the wood backing, and to make it look nicer
