Life Sized Functional Star Wars R2-D2
Chapman Robotics Club Spring 2025 Semester Project Lead
Project Overview
I, along with the immense help of a great team, spearheaded the development of a life-sized, functional R2-D2 replica. This ambitious project combined mechanical engineering, electronics, and software programming to create an interactive Star Wars droid.
The project pushed the boundaries of student robotics, requiring careful planning, team coordination, and innovative problem-solving to bring this iconic character to life.
Key Features
- Full-scale replica
- Motorized dome head with 360-degree+ rotation
- Custom sound effects linked to 6 emotion buttons on custom controller UI
- LED lighting system for authentic display panels
- Two-wheeled drive system
- Custom Remote control operation
Technologies Used
- Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers for control
- 3D printing for custom parts and detail work
- Custom LED PCBs
- Servo motors and motors for articulation and movement
- Audio playback system with speaker integration
My Role
My role quickly went from just the lighting systems to Co-managing the project itself. I oversaw timelines, team progress, and integration through the whole system.
Media
A bit of media was created around R2, here is some of the content generated
